Somewhere between places
A note on the in-between hours, when a journey becomes its own destination.
The parts of a journey we plan are rarely the parts we remember most clearly. We book a room and make a list. Then, years later, what returns is the light through a train window, a conversation at a café, or the peculiar stillness of an airport before dawn.
Between here and there
Travel creates a temporary distance from our usual habits. There is less we know how to do automatically. We pay attention to signs, to voices, to the way a street changes after a corner. Even a simple errand becomes something we have to discover.
Sometimes the gift of going somewhere is learning how to be where you are.
I wonder how much of that attention we could bring home. We do not need to pretend our own city is unfamiliar. We only need to admit that familiarity is incomplete. There are streets we have never walked and questions we have never thought to ask.
Leaving space in the plan
An unplanned hour is not a wasted hour. It can become the part of the day that belongs most fully to us. A walk without a destination, a long lunch, a bench with a good view: these are modest things, but they are also a way of allowing a place to introduce itself.
The next time I go somewhere, I want to make a little less of a plan. To leave enough room for the journey to become something I could not have predicted before it began.
